about

Formed in the late sixties and originally known as The Beaters, the South African group consisting of guitarists Selby Ntuli and Saitana (real name: Monty Ndimande), bassist Alec Khaoli and drummer Sipho Mabuse decided to change their name to Harari during a tour through Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) in 1976.

Harari made a fortune as South Africa's premier importers of soul and funk music. While singing in Zulu and Sotho, the group was, stylistically, pure American pop. During the 1970s, they enjoyed a wide multi-racial following that only ended with the untimely death of a band member in 1979 and the group's subsequent dissolution.
